Celo VPN Review [2020]: Allows Torrenting, but No Netflix

Celo VPN is an Australian-based service that wants to "secure your online activity." In this review, we provide a complete rundown of its features, performance, and pricing.

Here we have an Australian-based VPN with 18 servers across 15 countries. If you know anything about VPN servers you will likely be concerned that this is a very low number. However, we have seen some VPN services that have blazing fast speeds even with a small server count.

Beyond the small server package, you get industry-leading AES 256-bit encryption along with four of the most popular protocols to choose from. There are a few different payment plans to choose from with Celo VPN as well as a free trial option.

We’re giving this review all we’ve got because we want to find out how this service stacks up against the stiff competition. Let’s get to it!

Quick Downsides of Celo VPN
  • No mobile app (requires OpenVPN configuration)
  • Located in the Five Eyes Alliance area (not a no logs vpn)

  • No Netflix

How Much Does It Cost?

Celo VPN is priced somewhere around the middle. It’s not too expensive, but it’s not too cheap, either. We feel that given the number of benefits you get for this service; its pricing is right on the money.

You get to choose from a few different options in terms of package length, but the benefits do not change regardless of what package you want. Everyone also has the option of choosing a two-day free trial.

Here is a breakdown of its pricing plans:

  • One month – $7.00 per month
  • Three months – $18.00 billed quarterly
  • Six month – $35.00 billed semi-annually
  • One year – $66.00 billed annually

Something we love about Celo VPN is the number of payment options it has. You can pay using a credit or debit card, PayPal, or a vast assortment of cryptocurrencies.

One thing we noticed is, if you want a refund, it will pay you at the current exchange rate instead of the rate at the time of purchase. This means you could receive a little more or a little less than you originally paid.

What We Like About Celo VPN

So far, Celo VPN is looking like it could be a great choice for a VPN. Let’s take a more in-depth look into the best features of this service.

No Logging

According to Celo VPN’s privacy policy, it does not log sites you visit or anything you stream while connected to its servers. What it does collect is minimal. It takes your email and payment details like most other VPNs. Payments get processed through a third-party website, so it doesn’t even have that information available.

Advanced Encryption

The goal of a VPN is to disguise your IP address and keep your true identity hidden online. With OpenVPN and 256-bit encryption, there will be no security problems and that you’re protected.

Tons of Features

Regardless of what payment terms you choose, you will benefit from a ton of great features. Here is a few worth naming:

  • Free DDoS Protection
  • Unlimited downloads
  • IKEv2
  • Five simultaneous connections
  • Ad/Malware Blocker

Compatible With Tor and Torrenting Works

Let’s cover two at once here. First, you’ll gain access to the security-minded browser Tor. This is important for anonymous access to the internet. Tor adds another layer of security by running your traffic through relays that reroute it and make it impossible to identify the source of the traffic.

Next, you also have unlimited torrenting on all of its servers. Celo VPN also provides tutorials to help you do it! During our research, we found tests from other experts, and they said that all the servers worked perfectly, and it was easy to set up.

What We Dislike About Celo VPN

Unfortunately, it’s not all good news. We wish we could tell you that everything about Celo VPN is perfect. What we can tell you is that the cons are not that bad with this VPN. Here are some of them.

Difficult to Setup

We’ve never had a VPN that was this difficult to set up. One significant issue we had was the lack of a mobile app. Although you can use its servers on your smartphone, you need to set up OpenVPN with the Celo VPN settings yourself, and that is not always possible for someone with no experience.

To choose a country you have to guess because they are all abbreviated in a way that doesn’t make sense. It also doesn’t give you an exact city location, it gives you a code, and you have to guess where it is.

Australian Jurisdiction

Australian Jurisdiction

Celo VPN is in Australia, which means it is located in within the five eyes alliance. The United States, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand all share information so this means that if any of these governments want to gather data about the users on this service, Celo VPN may have to forfeit that information.

Luckily, Celo VPN doesn’t log anything so it shouldn’t have much dirt on you to give in that instance.

Forget Netflix

Netflix understands that people are streaming geo-restricted content using VPNs. It happens all the time, and now Netflix is actively trying to stop it. It is having some success in doing so, as more and more VPNs are now blocked from accessing Netflix. During our research, we checked out some tests done on Celo VPN to see if it was able to bypass Netflix’s blockers.

The result was a complete no.

We suspected that it wouldn’t be able to get by with such a small package of servers. If you are looking to stream geo-restricted Netflix content, you’re better off going for a VPN with a large number of servers.

Our Verdict

That’s all folks. Overall, it is an average VPN and although we thought it worked okay, we cannot recommend it because it just cannot compare to the other great options which are our there. If you want some examples of what we mean check out our best vpn list.
