Unlocator VPN Review [2020] – Is This Danish VPN Any Good?

We look at Unlocator in this detailed review, the VPN and smart DNS service. Unlocator is excellent for unblocking streaming platforms and comes with many other privacy and security features.

Here we have a unique VPN hybrid that started as a DNS proxy in 2013. The company is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, and is new to the VPN scene. In 2019 it launched its VPN service paired along with its DNS Server.

We’ll explain how that all works shortly.

The goal of every VPN is to hide your real location and disguise it with a different one. To do this, VPN services replace your real IP address with one from their servers, simple as that. This prevents ISPs, governments, hackers, and other entities from tracking your online browsing activity.

Let’s see if Unlocator does a good job of protecting your privacy.

Understanding Unlocator

Now let’s get into what makes this VPN so different. Unlocator uses a smart DNS proxy that allows you to have unrestricted access to the internet anywhere in the world. The cool thing about this technology is it only works when it has to.

According to Unlocator:

“This means that with Unlocator Smart DNS you can appear to be located in multiple countries at the same time. This will allow you to unblock a streaming service on your Apple TV from the UK while also unblocking a US streaming service on your laptop.”

Why does this matter?

It’s different than a VPN because it doesn’t slow you down as much as a VPN server does. Plus, Unlocator also offers a hybrid mode that allows you to use both at the same time. You can use the Smart DNS for streaming and simple things while encrypting your data through the VPN.

Benefits of Unlocator

Here are some of the most outstanding benefits of Unlocator:

How Much Does Unlocator Cost?

In terms of pricing, you have a couple of different options with Unlocator. The first option is to purchase the Smart DNS without the VPN. This would give you access to restricted streaming services across as many devices as you want. With this alone, you would not have your data encrypted.

Compatible With Almost Anything

With Unlocator you can stream as much as you want. Netflix and torrenting both work on this VPN/DNS proxy.

Constantly Changing IP

Unlocator has servers in more than 20 countries (not many compared with 90+ for expressvpn and nordvpn), and you can decide how often you want to hop between servers. You can choose a time as low as every 15 minutes or as long as every 360 minutes. This feature adds more anonymity and protection.

No DNS Leaking or Logging

During our research, one thing that we look out for is any issues regarding DNS leaking or logging. Across a few different test runs, we noticed that people experimenting with the product experienced no DNS leakage.

In regards to logging, Unlocator has a strict policy against logging, and its jurisdiction in Denmark is favorable to privacy so you shouldn’t have to worry about Unlocator logging and selling your data.

The only downside to its policy is that it does record your email, address, name, and IP.

Strong Security

The industry standard for encryption right now is AES 256-bit encryption with the OpenVPN protocol. This is what Unlocator uses in most cases, as well as the L2TP/IPSec and IKEv2 protocols.

Its VPN also offers a kill switch that ensures that your data only travels through its encrypted network, and is not exposed if your connection to the VPN is lost.

What We Dislike About Unlocator

This VPN and DNS service has a lot of great features, and there are not really any negatives that we feel need to be mentioned. The only issue we did find was with regards to its customer service which we outline below.

Poor Customer Service

While you might get top-notch streaming, you don’t get top-notch support. We found it incredibly hard to find any email or contact information for Unlocator. During our research, many people also experienced this problem. You think you are reaching a contact form or chat when you get redirected to another FAQ page.

Customer support is nearly non-existent with Unlocator. For a company that claims to have support from names like “The Wall Street Journal” and “Forbes;” you would think it could provide a decent customer service ticket system.

Our Verdict

Overall, Unlocator is great for unlocking streaming services and bypassing geo-restrictions, and its VPN service looks to have all the best feature in place that you would hope for. On top of that, Unlocator is also backed up by a rating of 9.7 out of 10 on Trustpilot, where more than 460 people have rated the product.

So, if you are looking to stream content from a variety of platforms on fast servers that always work and protect your privacy online with a secure VPN; Unlocator is not a bad choice, but there are far better options.
