In this review, we look at a Hong Kong-based VPN called OneVPN. This service is owned by a company called Unravel Technologies Ltd. The service offers around 390 servers across 59 different countries. It claims that all its servers ensure complete security, the fastest speeds, and access to every corner of the internet which we think is very unlikely to be true.

Now that you have a brief understanding of the pros and cons, you might be wondering how affordable OneVPN is. In terms of pricing, when stacked up against the competition, we would say that OneVPN is somewhere in the middle. It is certainly not the most expensive but not the cheapest either.

What We Like About OneVPN

It’s time to dig up some dirt. Earlier in the article we discussed some of the pros and cons of using OneVPN, but now we’re going to expand upon it. Here are the things we liked most about OneVPN.

Limited Logging Concerns

OneVPN is pretty clear about its logging policy. We find that a lot of VPNs services like to tip-toe around what information they store, but OneVPN is pretty straightforward. In its privacy policy, it comes right out and say that it only saves your login and logout time.

That’s it.

This is a standard procedure that helps the company grow and improve its service. Everything checks out okay here.

No DNS Leaks

Sometimes when you are funneling information through the VPN tunnel, your true IP address can leak, but during our research, we found many tests showing that OneVPN did not have any DNS leaks. It seems like you won’t have to worry about security when using this service.

Strong Encryption

We’ll pile more on our previous points. No logging, no leaks, and you also get top-notch encryption and four VPN protocols to choose from. The only downside is that it does not support OpenVPN, which is the best vpn protocol by far. It does have a variety of other choices, though.

You also get AES-256 bit encryption, which is as good as you can get. It’s entirely hacker-proof and it’s what many governments use to protect confidential information.

What We Dislike About OneVPN

We hit you with some good news, but now we have some bad news. OneVPN does a great job of protecting your identity, which is essential. The only problem is; it doesn’t offer much else.

Horrible Customer Service

When you’re dealing with something as sensitive as a VPN, you want there to be high-quality, fast responding, and helpful customer service. You will not get that with OneVPN. During our research, we found some tests of the customer support team and noticed response times of two hours on the live chat.

Chinese Government

While OneVPN is located in Hong Kong which is outside of the five eyes agreement, we are still concerned about the influence of the Chinese government. China only allows VPNs that are approved by the government, and the Chinese government is notorious for surveillance and censorship.

While Hong Kong has its own governmental system, it is still part of China and the Chinese government’s influence and power in HK seem to be ever increasing.  This is a major red flag, and although there is no proof of a problem, it simply doesn’t feel right.

The best jurisdictions for a VPN are the ones that value privacy in their country. Unfortunately, China is not one of them.

Slow Speeds

OneVPN advertises blazing fast speeds on its website, but during our research, we found the complete opposite. In a few different tests, we noticed drops of around 70-80% in download and upload speeds. It’s not horrible, but they are by no means “blazing fast.”

Confusing Server Support

Believe it or not, sometimes VPN services will lie about their server package to bring in business. They will claim that they have servers in places they don’t – how could you prove them wrong. During our research, we found some people testing the authenticity of OneVPN’s server package, and they discovered that OneVPN claimed that servers were in places they weren’t.

That’s one of the significant problems with a VPN service; you never know how truthful it is until you find out the hard way.

Our Verdict

Do we recommend using OneVPN? Unfortunately not.

While the encryption and protocols are state of the art and its policy on logging reads well, there are some major drawbacks to this service.

If you are looking for perks like Netflix or great customer service, you won’t get that with OneVPN. Then there is also the issue with its slow server speeds and the potential issue of being in Hong Kong which is part of China. Also since it is illegal to gamble in online casinos in Hong Kong, you may seem some restrictions if you are trying to access them through this VPN.
